Chough – starting to fledge with the first ones out of the nest on 19/6 – this represents quite a late season, they can fledge as soon as 6th June in some years. Most likely reason being a) the rough winter (adults struggled to feed and were not in good condition going into the season) and b) the dry spring (ground became very hard making feeding difficult. Adults were seen turning to anthills much earlier in the season that normal, which produce lower biomass results than a juicy beetle larvae). Nevertheless 5 of the initial 8 sites have now fledged (numbers varying from 1-4 per nest). 2 sites to go with the 8th having failed (predated by raven). By next week we should be able to confirm final numbers
