Help us keep an eye on the wildlife that calls the island home by sponsoring one of our many surveys on Ramsey Island. As a thank you, you and a friend can join us on the survey for a real behind the scenes wildlife experience and a good chat with our wardens.

All our surveys are essential in enabling us to monitor the breeding success of our key species. Many are a statutory requirement under UK wildlife law and European directives. Our annual survey results contribute to wildlife monitoring and research programs across Wales and the UK flagging up any issues in the wider environment.

Sponsorship fee: £120 will cover the cost of each survey and the return boat trip for two. All surveys need 4 hours to complete and will run from 12pm to 4pm. Hot drinks are provided but you will need to bring your own packed lunch if required.

2018 Surveys:

May – Choughs

We will visit known chough nest sites to check on progress. By studying the behaviour of chough pairs from a distance to avoid any disturbance, we will ascertain how their breeding season is progressing. Are they incubating eggs or feeding chicks?

August - Fulmars

A final check on this seasons breeding success. We will be looking for large fulmar chicks at 3 study sites on the island’s north and west coast. Exclusive access and off the beaten track.

August - Manx shearwaters

A check on our Manx shearwater nest boxes. Chicks hatched in our artificial burrows are weighed weekly from hatching to fledging. We might even fit in a Chough or Butterfly survey too. Exclusive access off the beaten track.

For dates and more information please email

To sponsor a survey and book your places on the boat crossing please contact Thousand Islands Expeditions on 01437 721721 or email

IMPORTANT POINTS – Please read before booking:

Our birds nest in sea caves, on cliffs and burrowed slopes. Our surveys will take us near to cliff edges and sponsors need to be comfortable with this. You will be accompanied by the warden at all times.

Due to the steep steps in St Justinians and in Ramsey harbour and the rough terrain on the island, a reasonable level of fitness is required and sturdy footwear with good grip and ankle support, ideally walking boots, are essential.

Ramsey is a rat free island. If you are bringing a picnic, please ensure it is securely packed in a rucksack or cool bag. Open carrier bags are not permitted and will be refused. If you leave your bag unattended in St Justinians for any time, please check it carefully for signs of rodent damage before boarding the island boat.
