to experience the unspoilt natural beauty of this spectacular island nature reserve.
Ramsey Island is situated just off the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast. It is owned and protected by the RSPB, who have granted us at Thousand Islands Expeditions sole landing rights to the Island.
Each day the Ramsey Island ferry boat, Gower Ranger, takes a number of day visitors to experience the unspoilt natural beauty of this spectacular island nature reserve.
Our ferry runs twice a day, at both 1000 & 1200, before picking passengers up for return at 1600. The Island is open daily, apart from Friday, where the wardens and volunteers spend the day doing essential jobs, ensuring the island is well maintained, and doing vital bird counts and surveys.
On arrival at Ramsey Island, the RSPB wardens will be there to greet you, and go through some important information about the island. Once the talk is complete, you will be given a map, and are then free to explore the island at your leisure.
The main trail around the island, which can be divided into two loops, is a 2.5 mile circular walk, with potential climbs of up to 100 metres. Strong, sturdy footwear is advised, as the footpaths, which explore this beautiful reserve, can be both rocky and rugged.
In spring the island’s cliffs come alive with thousands of returning seabirds. Peregrines and Choughs also spotted nesting on these cliffs which are some of the highest cliffs in Wales.
In summer, the carpets of heather come into bloom attracting thousands of bees and butterflies to the Island, adding a huge variety of colour, and character to the island.
Autumn sees the Atlantic Grey Seal colony increase, with 100’s of white fluffy seal pups born on Ramseys beaches and bays every year. As you walk around the Island you can both spot, and hear these vocal pups, as they use their calls to locate their mother, and to signal their presence.
We always advise taking food and liquids for your day trip over to the Island, so why not take lunch with you? You can sit and admire the spectacular views from the Island and watch the wildlife in its natural habitat, whilst enjoying a well deserved picnic.
