Ramsey Island RSPB Nature Reserve

Ramsey Island is situated just off the Pembrokeshire Coast, and was purchased by the RSPB in 1992. In 1996, it became a designated National Nature Reserve, due to its internationally important flora and fauna, which includes 20 species of rare plants, breeding Chough, Lapwing and the largest Grey Seal colony in Wales.

From May to September, The Island is awash with colour, with bluebells, pink thrift and purple heather, which draw out bees and butterflies around the island.

At nearly 120m (400 ft.) the Western cliffs are among the highest in Wales, and are home to Ravens, Peregrines and Buzzards.

In spring, the cliffs come alive, the returning Guillimots, Razorbills, Fulmars and Kittiwakes arrive back to nest. Chough also breed on these cliffs, seeking out deep fissures and caves in which to build their nests. From mid July however, the cliffs empty as the auk chicks head out to the open sea.

From August, it is time for the Atlantic Grey Seals to pup, several hundred white fluffy seal pups are born each year on Ramseys beaches and in the caves.

The Southern heathlands of the Island offer a special combination of heather, gorse and coastal plants, which in August come into their glory, when the heathers and gorse, flower together. This habitat is the haunt of Stonechats, Meadow Pipets, Linnets and Skylarks.

The summits of Carn Ysgubor and Carn Llundain give stunning views to the mainland, down south to Skomer Island and on the clearest days, the west coast of Ireland.

There is a main trail around the island, which is about 3.5 miles (5.6 km), and can be divided into two loops, which makes for an incredible scenic walk.

The island is also home to the RSPB wardens, who live on the island full time whilst the island is open to the public. Along with volunteers, the wardens at the island work tirelessly maintaining the island, monitoring habitats, doing vital bird count research, and ensuring that the island operates in a safe environment for the public and the marine and bird life to which it homes. In order to see Ramsey Island and all it has to offer, you can join one of the day trips which take you over the island, Ramsey Island Landing, or if you wanted to get closer the hidden caves and coves you can do so by joining a trip which navigates around the island, Ramsey Island Adventure.
